Steel Gratings

Steel gratings are welded or pressure-locked open-mesh steel panels used for walkways, platforms, drainage covers, and trench covers where drainage and light transmission matter as much as load capacity. NLS sources welded and swage-locked steel grating in mild steel, galvanized, and stainless steel, standard bearing bar depths from 25mm to 50mm, to BS 4592 and ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531, sized to project loading tables.

Steel grating is an open-mesh steel panel made from parallel load-bearing bars, either welded or swage-locked (pressure-locked) to cross bars at a set spacing, which gives it a working surface that drains liquid, passes light and ventilation, and still carries a design load. That combination is why it replaces solid plate on walkways, platforms, and trench covers wherever standing liquid, gas buildup, or the weight of a solid steel plate would be a problem.

NLS sources both construction types. Welded grating, the more common type, welds bearing bars to cross bars at every intersection, giving high strength for a given depth, standard on industrial platforms and heavy-duty walkways. Swage-locked grating presses the cross bar into a serrated groove in the bearing bar without welding, giving a smoother top surface and slightly different load performance, sometimes preferred where the panel needs to be non-welded for corrosion or finish reasons. Bearing bar depth typically runs 25mm to 50mm depending on span and load requirement, in mild steel (painted or hot-dip galvanized) and stainless steel where the environment demands it. Reference standards are BS 4592 for grating flooring in the UK/Gulf market and ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 where a project follows North American grating design practice.

On Saudi projects, steel grating shows up as walkway and platform decking on process plants, drainage and trench covers around pump rooms and utility corridors, and stair treads and mezzanine flooring where load and drainage both matter. Selection depends on the span between supports, the design load (foot traffic vs. vehicle or equipment loading), and the corrosion environment, so a panel schedule or a loading table gets a more accurate quote than a bare area figure.

NLS quotes grating against panel dimensions, bearing bar depth and spacing, material and finish, and the applicable loading standard, and returns a priced quote in USD, typically per square meter with cut-to-size or standard panel options depending on the layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between welded and swage-locked steel grating?+

Welded grating fuses the bearing bar to the cross bar at every intersection for high strength. Swage-locked grating presses the cross bar into a serrated groove without welding, giving a smoother finish and sometimes preferred for corrosion-sensitive or aesthetic reasons, with a slightly different load rating for the same bar depth.

How is steel grating sized for a walkway or platform?+

Sizing depends on the span between supports and the design load, whether that's foot traffic, vehicle loading, or equipment weight. NLS quotes off a loading table or a layout drawing rather than an area figure alone to get the bearing bar depth right.

Does NLS supply galvanized or stainless steel grating?+

Yes. Mild steel grating is available painted or hot-dip galvanized for standard outdoor and industrial exposure, and stainless steel is available where the environment is corrosive or the application needs it, such as chemical or coastal-adjacent sites.

What standards apply to steel grating flooring in Saudi Arabia?+

BS 4592 is the common reference for grating flooring, walkways, and stair treads on Gulf projects, with ANSI/NAAMM MBG 531 used where a project follows North American grating design and load-rating practice instead.
